Day 31: The Machete

Publish date: May 18, 2019

So I’m guessing the machete man story is getting national attention, given the uptick in “are you alive?” texts.

Here’s my perspective of the story: On day 10, a hiker named Sun Drop told us about a sketchy guy with a machete and a dog calling himself “sovereign.” She warned us that he was far ahead of us, but to just watch out. This wasn’t the first time I’d heard about creepy hikers, but this was the first news of a violent one.

I happened to have cell service that night, and read from local news that it was all a false alarm. I didn’t hear much about him for the next few weeks, besides the handful of thruhikers who carried 7’ spears to protect themselves from him, and a rumor that he actually carried a ukulele not machete.

A couple of days ago, we heard that the man killed one, maybe 4 people. The hikers who registered their thruhikes with the ATC received texts that a portion of the trail, 100 miles up from us, was closed due to a crime scene. Then today I got some texts from y’all. Anyways, I’m alive! Coming into this, I knew there could be bad people on the trail, but I cling to the stats that indicate I’m more likely to die while biking in the city than hiking on the Appalachian Trail.
