Day 112: In Sickness and in HealthPublish date: Aug 23, 2019
Today, I woke up very reluctantly, and with a full fledged cold. Stuffy nose, sore throat, and generally weak. I thought, “If I was in the real world I would call off work today.” I considered the logistics of taking a zero day: I’d need to find a way to get more food, I’d fall behind my buddies, I wasn’t by water. Then I thought, “I bet Jennifer Pharr Davis woke up feeling wrecked all the time, and she persevered!” So I took some Advil and packed up.
Every step was twice as taxing as usual. At one point Yoshi and I followed a road for a half mile and I just walked with my eyes closed for 98% of it. Every mile or so, he could hear me blowing my nose behind him into some toilet paper (that’s a real luxury by the way, most people use leaves or just snot rocket!).
Anyway, it was really only nasty for a day. Someone told me that there are no bad days, only hard ones, and I’m starting to buy it. That day was still great! We did 17 miles and stopped at a beautiful stealth site just below Bear Mountain, one of the most visited spots on trail (due to its proximity to NYC). And all is well, now!
