Day 157: The Maine State

Publish date: Oct 21, 2019

Well, I’ve hiked from Georgia to Maine. Now I’m gonna hike further into Maine. It’s already getting cold, and the leaves are turning. Maine is very quiet compared to the crowds in the Whites. It’s known for being the most remote state on trail.

Like the rest of New England, I’ve never been to this state before. It seems to have a particularly strong sense of identity. Today, we hitched into Stratton with a real Mainer. I asked him what made someone a Mainer, and he replied “people say you need to be born here to be a Mainer, but I think that’s a little extreme. I think you need to have grown up here. And of course you need to be good with killing, hunting and eating.”
